I've run the game check a few times now and there are no bad files which really confuses me

So everything has been working fine until earlier today. I applied the latest update and was able to play for the past few days and all of a sudden today, the game crashed when I threw a grenade. Ever since then when I start it up, it gives me the message "hl2.exe has stopped working." It seems to pop up as soon as I move the mouse after the main menu has loaded up and everything. I tried uninstalling completely and reinstalling. The original css installation file works without any patches but I can't join any games since it's an older version. But as soon as I apply the latest patch, the message pops up and it crashes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
